DAB celebrates National Aviation Day with paper airplane challenge

National Aviation Day is Aug. 19, and Daytona Beach International Airport is celebrating by launching its first ever Kids’ Paper Airplane Challenge. Kids will get the chance to put their paper airplane skills to the test for a chance to win prizes for the most accurate flyer and most creative paper airplane.

Pilots with the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) flight team will judge the paper airplanes. Prizes include a tour of an ERAU aircraft and a behind-the-scenes tour of DAB airport. The winning paper airplanes will be announced via email and on Instagram (@flydab_) on Aug. 19. Only planes made from paper will be accepted, but children are encouraged to get as creative as possible with their design.

“We know most families are still spending a lot of time at home, so this is an opportunity to get children involved in celebrating this important day with a fun and creative activity,” said Joanne Magley, the airport’s director of Marketing and Customer Experience.

To enter, parents can drive in and drop off their child’s submission from 9 to 11 a.m. Aug. 13, 14, 17 and 18 with DAB volunteers who will be collecting curbside by the “Welcome” overhead sign. The paper planes should include the child’s first name and age, as well as the parent’s email address.
