Delta Air Lines passengers arriving at Daytona Beach International Airport today received a sweet reception when they got off the plane. Airport staff gave out cupcakes on all arriving and departing flights to the county-owned airport in celebration of the airline’s 35th anniversary of continuous air service.
In 1979, Delta began daily scheduled passenger service between what was then known as Daytona Beach Regional Airport and Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport.
“Delta has really been the major airline service provider every day continuously for 35 years and has kept our community connected to just about every major destination on the planet and hundreds of smaller ones as well,” said Rick Karl, the airport’s director. “Delta has had a continuous partnership with the airport despite reorganization in 2006 and the downturn in the economy that followed. Delta is truly an economic asset for the county.”
Delta has flown more than 125,000 flights in and out of Daytona Beach International Airport, Karl said.
