Airport donates models to Volusia County schools

Eager to help students’ futures soar, the Daytona Beach International Airport donated model jet engines to three Volusia County schools. The schools—Edgewater Elementary, Freedom Elementary and Deltona High—have incorporated Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, referred to as STEM programs, into their curriculum.

The model, a small-scale replica of a turbofan jet engine, is fully functional with motorized parts and realistic sounds, and features high and low-pressure turbines and a transparent casing. Successfully constructing the 50-piece model provides students an engaging, hands-on way to learn how jet engines operate.

Schools receiving models were selected in conjunction with the Lodging and Hospitality Association of Volusia County, which currently works with 50 schools through the Adopt a School program. Donation of model engines to Heritage Middle and Palm Terrace Elementary are scheduled in the coming weeks. The airport will continue to provide models as schools are identified.
