Passenger traffic at Daytona Beach International Airport declined 24
percent in June in comparison with the same month last year.
The County-operated airport recorded 44,371 incoming and outgoing
passengers during June. This compares to the 58,765 travelers recorded
in June last year.
For the past 12 months, 578,087 travelers have flown in and out of
the Airport, a 9 percent decrease over the same 12-month period the
prior year when the Airport handled 638,546 passengers.
Stephen J. Cooke, DBIA’s Director of Business Development, said
June’s traffic decline is the result of Delta’s 50 percent reduction in
seat inventory. In June last year there were 60,728 available Delta
seats in comparison with 30,547 seats this June. This includes Delta and
Delta Connection Carriers, Comair and Atlantic Southeast Airlines. The
sharp decline in Delta’s seat inventory is being experienced by many
other airport’s throughout the Delta system following the carrier’s
filing under Chapter 11 in October 2005, Cooke added.
In contrast, Continental Airlines increased the number of passengers
handled in June by 24 percent -- from 4,827 in June 2005 to 6,001 this
June. United Airlines, which began new service in February handled 4,601
passengers during June.
Overall, airline passenger loads increased from 80 percent in June
last year to 84 percent in June this year.
