Strong community support convinces AirTran to continue air service at Daytona Beach International Airport

Strong community support has convinced AirTran Airways to stay in Daytona Beach year round.
Airline officials have informed Daytona Beach International Airport the carrier plans to continue low fare air service beyond the planned seasonal period that was to have ended July 9.

“This is great news for the traveling public and great news for the airport,” said Airport Director Dennis McGee.

AirTran commenced seasonal service at Daytona Beach International Airport January 11 with three daily flights to Atlanta with connecting service to more than 40 cities nationwide. AirTran’s current schedule includes four daily nonstop flights to Atlanta and nonstop weekend service to Baltimore-Washington.

For the first three months of service beginning January 11 AirTran carried 51,346 passengers at Daytona Beach International Airport which helped to increase total airport passenger traffic by 39 percent over the same three months in 2006.

Effective July 9, AirTran will continue to offer one daily nonstop flight to its Atlanta hub with connecting service to numerous destinations. The daily nonstop flight will leave Atlanta at 12:19 p.m. and arrive in Daytona Beach at 1:38 p.m. This flight will depart Daytona Beach at 2:13 p.m. and arrive in Atlanta at 3:38 p.m. Additional flights may be added based on passenger demand, McGee said.

Retention of AirTran service beyond the seasonal period is the result of strong support from the local community and business travelers within the region and resulted in AirTran’s decision to continue offering air service at Daytona Beach International Airport.

McGee pointed out the airport has been engaged in a marketing partnership program with AirTran for several months to promote the new low fare air service options offered by the carrier at Daytona Beach International Airport.

Headquartered in Orlando, AirTran Airways is one of the country’s largest low-fare airlines. The carrier serves 56 U.S. cities with a fleet of 129 jets including Boeing 717s and Boeing 737-700s aircraft. AirTran has the newest fleet of Boeing aircraft in America. The Boeing 717 is configured for 117 seats – 105 in coach class and 12 in business class. The Boeing 737-700 is configured for 137 seats – 125 in coach and 12 in business class. All aircraft offer free XM Satellite radio, spacious overhead bins and assigned seating. AirTran’s frequent flyer program is called A+ Rewards.
